Marie Kindrick Fair Housing Awards
Marie Kindrick was a remarkable woman who for nearly sixty years was committed to working for the rights of those who are under-represented. Born into a wealthy New England family, Kindrick defied convention and expectations and made her life a testament to the kind of work that we honor with these awards. As a REALTOR® in our community, she was a volunteer tutor for the DABR Partners in Education at Ruskin School and also taught English as a second language in Kettering Schools. She served on DABR's Equal Opportunity Committee from 1992 until her untimely passing in May 1998. Each year we pay tribute to Marie Kindrick and honor her for the inspiration to work for fairness and equity for everyone by honoring a Community Professional, a Community Volunteer, and a REALTOR®.
Workshop — Fair Housing Mock Trial
A traditionally popular presentation for REALTORS® and other housing industry professionals, the mock trial is a rendering of a fair housing trial loosely based on facts from an actual case. The workshop will examine the legal issues most often associated with fair housing compliance, including issues of steering, occupancy standards, and denials of reasonable accommodations or modifications for individuals with disabilities. The trial will focus on one or more of these areas.
The trial will be presided over by a judge, with community members and industry players in various rolls (plaintiffs, defendants, jury members), and the trial will be “role played” for all workshop participants, with opportunity for questions and answers. During jury deliberations a discussion of problem-raising situations that REALTORS® and housing professionals may face in relation to fair housing, such as how to respond to questions about the demographics of a community, will be held.
