| Speaker and presenter bios | Generously sponsored by... Fred Underwood — Keynote speaker Fred Underwood is the Director of Diversity and Outreach Programs at the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) and manages NAR's diversity and fair housing program. Since 1990  Fred Underwood Underwood has staffed NAR's Equal Opportunity–Cultural Diversity Committee, and he leads the development of NAR's fair housing policy. Underwood initiated a comprehensive program on diversity in the housing market and developed precedent-setting partnerships with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to jointly address the issues of diversity, fair housing and community outreach. He liasons with private fair housing and civil rights organizations and promotes cooperation between the housing industry and fair housing organizations. Underwood has a 25-year career in promoting fair housing and inclusive communities. Prior to joining NAR, Fred was an Equal Opportunity Specialist in HUD's Chicago regional office. He previously coordinated the Fair Housing Program for the City of Evanstan, Illinois, and was a tester and testing supervisor with G. Michael Payton — Featured speaker  G. Michael Payton , Esq., is the Executive Director of the Ohio Civil Rights Commission (OCRC), a state agency that investigates and enforces the Ohio Civil Rights Act prohibitions against discrimination in employment, public accommodations and housing, and other areas and that provides comprehensive education and outreach to organizations throughout Ohio. Payton previously served as Chief Legal Counsel and Director of Regional Operations for OCRC from 1997 to 2000. He also served as an Assistant Attorney General for the State of Ohio from 1984 to 1995, during which time he served as OCRC Counsel and conducted administrative prosecutions. In addition he served as Assistant Chief of the Attorney General's Transportation Section where he was a defense counsel in a variety of areas including employment law. Payton has a B.A. from The Ohio State University and a J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center. the Leadership Council for Metropolitan Open Communities in Chicago. In the early 1980s, Underwood was Director of the Southwest Community Congress, an interracial coalition of grassroots organizations on Chicago's southwest side. Underwood has served in an advisory capacity for a number of organizations including the University of New Hampshire's "Home of Your Own" project, the Fair Housing Council of Greater Washington, and the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation's "With Ownership Wealth" program. He is currently Secretary of the Asian Pacific Institute of Congressional Studies and a member of the board of the Asian Real Estate Association of America. Underwood has a Master's degree in Urban Planning and Policy from the University of Illinois at Chicago and holds the Realtor® Certified Executive (RCE) designation. Marie Kindrick Fair Housing Awards Marie Kindrick was a remarkable woman who for nearly sixty years was committed to working for the rights of those who are under-represented. Born into a wealthy New England family, Kindrick defied convention and expectations and made her life a testament to the kind of work that we honor with these awards. As a REALTOR® in our community, she was a volunteer tutor for the DABR Partners in Education at Ruskin School and also taught English as a second language in Kettering Schools. She served on DABR's Equal Opportunity Committee from 1992 until her untimely passing in May 1998. Each year we pay tribute to Marie Kindrick and honor her for the inspiration to work for fairness and equity for everyone by honoring a Community Professional, a Community Volunteer, and a REALTOR®. | Workshops | | Register above! |  Peg Gutsell  Deb Jetter Fair Housing and Accessibility Issues as well as several Inclusion Network associates with disabilities Fair Housing and Accessibility Issues is a comprehensive fair housing course that heightens the awareness of real estate agents, social service providers and urban and housing specialists on accessibility and visibility issues for people with disabilities. This workshop also prepares real estate agents and other professionals to interact appropriately with their customers who have disabilities in order to assist them in meeting their accessibility and visit-ability needs. Deb Jetter has been the Education and Outreach Coordinator for Housing Opportunities Made Equal in Cincinnati, Ohio, since 1978. During that time she has developed and implemented numerous fair housing courses that have been well received by the housing industry both locally and nationally. Her scope of instruction includes real estate agents, real estate managers, lenders, apartment managers and owners, and consumers seeking housing choices in the rental/real estate markets. Jetter has offered fair housing workshops at the national level through the National Fair Housing Alliance. In 2007 she provided fair housing training for property managers at military bases throughout the United States. In 2005 she developed an interactive fair housing class for small landlords that is available on CD. She is project manager of a 5-year grand from the Ohio Developmental Disabilities Council to provide accessibility and visitability training to housing providers. In 2007 Jetter received the Ohio Fair Housing Advocate Award from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Jetter has a B.A. degree in Education from Coe College and a Masters's degree in Theology from Princeton Theological Seminary. She is an active member of the American Society for Training and Development. Peg Gutsell is the Executive Director of the Inclusion Network and has worked for more than 25 years to promote people with disabilities becoming full participants in community life. Gutsell has taught classes in rehabilitation counseling, supporting families in the education process, and building school communities that include all students. She has designed and implemented community-based services that support individuals and their families at home and at school. She has written and presented on topics including self-determination, team collaboration, planning with students, individuals and family transitions, creating inclusive educational communities, and supporting workers with disabilities. Gutsell has a B.A. degree from Michigan State University, a Master's degree in Counseling from the University of Cincinnati, and a Doctorate degree in Education from the University of Cincinnati. |  David Rothstein  John Zimmerman Fair Housing and Foreclosure in Ohio facilitated by John Zimmerman, Vice President, Miami Valley Fair Housing Center, Dayton Fair Housing and Foreclosure in Ohio links fair housing rights to the current foreclosure crisis through an examination of lending trends and the research Policy Matters does on Ohio economic issues. This workshop also shows some of the real-life challenges faced by people living in Cleveland, Youngstown and Dayton John Zimmerman is the Vice President of the Miami Valley Fair Housing Center. Zimmerman is certified by the State of Ohio, Division of Real Estate, to conduct continuing education classes on fair housing and residential real estate topics. Zimmerman is a member of the Equal Opportunity Committee of the Dayton Area Board of REALTORS® and works extensively with the Greater Dayton Apartment Association as well as other professional housing organizations throughout Ohio. Zimmerman has a Bachelor's degree from Capital University in Columbus, Ohio. David Rothstein is a researcher at Policy Matters Ohio where he researches tax, wage and consumer policy, including the Earned Income Tax Credit, the living wage, and predatory lending. He also works on energy policy with the Apollo Alliance for clean energy and good jobs. Rothstein serves on the Steering Committee and was the 2007-2008 chair of the Policy and Advocacy Committee of the National Community Tax Coalition, which seeeks to improve the economic well-being of low- and moderate-income individuals, families and communities by building a movement to dramatically increase access to tax credits, benefits, and asset-building opportunities. He is the 2007 winner of the Greater Cleveland Community Shares Distinguished Activist Award for his work on Predatory Lending. Rothstein has a B.A. from John Carroll University in Cleveland and a Master's degree in Political Science from Kent State University. |
